4/7 - 5/15 DAIDO MORIYAMA: TOKYO COLORS
Moriyama was born in i938 in Osaka. At first, he was making a living by working as a graphic designer. Then fascinated by the photography, learning in a photo studio. Since then he has been vigorously active. He joined a coterie magazine, "PROVOKE'. He ran a photagraphy school, "WORK SHOP SHASIN GAKKO', wtth other photographers. Eiko Hosoe and Nobuyoshi Araki, etc. He was also connected to Shujl Terayama, an unique poet and dramatist. Moriyama's works has been always highly praised and also is strongly appreciated by the yonger generation not onl y in Japan but also in Europe and America. "Tokyo Colors", is the fisrt exhibition showing Moriyama's color prints. Though he is famous for his monochrome works, Moriyama was taking color photographs as well in 70's and 80's. This exhibition gives you a rare chance to see those color prints. He once told that when he took color photos, at first it didn't go as smoothly as monochromes, but then he found himself attracted unconciously by same particuler colors and became aware of the fact that taking photographs which he had thought to be carefully calcurated was actually spontaneous. The first impression of his color prints is not distant from the monochrome ones. They are grainy and blurred. Being emphasized by the contrasted dark shadow, the gaudy and void colors which were captured in his photographs look very real. Yet the reality is belong to another world as Moriyama tried to produce colors not seemed "real" by our everyday-life standard. He wasn't keen on reproducing "real" colors on the prints as vivid or shapr as possible, but he has been trying to make some distortion on them. Funnily enough, the distortion makes the prints more real and pop. After this exhibition, Moriyama will have an exhibition at the san Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and some other museums in the USA.

6/28 - 7/28 RITA ACKERMANN: STYLE SHOW FOR THE LEVITATION OF THE STORNG AMERICAN WOMEN
Rita Ackermann, born in Hungary in 1968, moved to NY in 1991 at the age of 23. Through the encounters with creative people, she found herself with her own artistic feature and started her own art. Her style became her own identity.
What she creates has been constantly changing not to stay in one medium, just as the internal change and growth of the artist herself. From the debut work that draws the ambiguity of internal sorrow and the extrovert repulsion to the world hidden inside their eyes under the appearance of innocent girls, to the portraits of boys with acrylic in a classical mannar, or the psychedelic collage-type works with pencils and watercolors, everytime she shows new material, it always gives us fresh surprise and strong impression. However, what's unchanged there is her attitude not to fear to destroy, search and change her style to seize the unknown creativity that lies inside her.
With these works and attitude, she's been having a lot of exhibition not just in NY but also in Tokyo and Europe, and has published two books. Through these activities she has got well reputation and deep sympathy for her works and attitude.
Her upcoming exhibition, "Style Show for the Levitation of the Strong American Women" is to be the first exhibition showing her works in Paris. In this exhibition, she shows us several paintings, and in addition to that, she designed clothes for this exhibition. All of them are under the concept of an imaginary fashion show in paintings and creating a style.
The theme of this "Style Show" was originally inspired by different charity events of American Women's Clubs which are organized by and for the high middle class American housewife helping the poor or the disabled of their community. These ladies often shop for clothes from catalogues so the highlite of these events is a fashion show (style show) featuring one of the designers of a well known fashion catalogue.
The paintings are the open field of the imagination running wild in colors and style, looking for the absurd in the conventional, the rebellious in the conservative.
